The Eberron rising from the last war is a core source materials book for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. The book covers the fifth campaign of the game known as Eberron. And this book provides campaign settings.

Let’s assume that you know what the Dungeons & Dragons game is about, so we won’t go deeply into that, but instead, we will concentrate on the Eberron settings campaign.

However, briefly, this is a tabletop role-playing game that’s usually called D&D or DnD and one that was one published in 1974. The game actually allows each player to create a character, and these characters go on war missions based on fantasy settings. A dungeon master serves as a referee and storyteller and maintains the campaign settings.

The Eberron campaign setting takes place on the Khorvaire continent right after a massive and destructive war. This setting was created to incorporate traditional DnD settings; however, it has been infused with a much darker tone.

This gives it the more traditional elements; however, it also has the dark magic adventure elements, which are not standard. These include things like magic, propelled trains, robots, and skyships.

Keith Baker’s Eberron Creation

In 2002 publisher Wizards of the Coast had a competition to find a new content creator for the unique DnD setting with the Fantasy Setting Search. After more than 11,000 entrants, Keith Baker was chosen as the winning entry, and his Eberron setting was officially published in June 2004 in a hardback book.

Timeline of the Eberron Setting

  • In 2004 the Eberron campaign setting was released to the public for the Dungeons & Dragons v3.5 version of the play.
  • In 2005 the book was a winner of the Origins Award, which was given for the Best Roleplaying Game Supplement of 2004.
  • By 2008 over 20 supplemental settings for the book were released.
  • In June 2009, the setting was incorporated in the DnD 4th edition via both the Eberron Player’s Guide and the newly released free adventure Khyber’s Harvest.
  • In February 2015, during the beta playtesting for the 5th Edition of DnD, the online title “Unearthed Arcana” included Eberron content.
  • On July 23, 2018, the Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron PDF was released on the Dungeon Masters Guild.
  • On November 19, 2019, the Eberron: Rising from the Last War was released on the hardcover.
  • Similarly, the Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron was updated to include content available in the Eberron rising from the last war pdf.

The Eberron Campaign Setting Content

  1. Magic

Eberron has been known to use magical elements a lot more than the prior and traditional DnD settings. The higher spells like the resurrection spells are not used so much; however, the lower level spells are very prevalent in this setting.

Many of the lower level magical spells are found in the Dragonmarked houses on magical lanterns on some cities streets. Similarly, a magical “lightning rail” powered by magic provides high-speed transportation between continents.

  1. Good vs. Evil

The good vs. evil debate is not so clear cut in this setting since evil beings from the good races, and vice versa is encouraged. Also, in the face of a familiar foe, the good and evil forces can come together temporarily to fend them off. In the enemy of my enemy anecdote and kind of scenario, the situation gets muddled a bit.

Both the good and the evil creatures will carry out espionage vs. the other by infiltrating their camps to gather Intel.

  1. Religion

The setting adds two character classes that are tied to the production and casting of magic. However, unlike the other traditional DnD religious-based characters, these do not have to be connected to a deity or religious affiliations to cast spells. In fact, they can do it independently without any consequences.

The two additions are the artificer and the magewright. The magewright is essentially a non-player character, and they are called an arcane caster who only cast low-level spells. On the other hand, the artificer can create magical items and have access to craft points that can be used to create magic without sacrificing the level points.

  1. Action points

The Eberron setting also introduced the use of feats which grant extra action points to the player. For example, it would allow a player to roll an eight-sided dice instead of six or an additional move using two action points.

The Fantasy World of Eberron

Eberron has seven continents, including in Khorvaire where most of the action takes place, and this world is mostly populated by humans who live in an area known as the Five Nations. However, there are other creatures in this world, as well. In the southeast, there are elves incontinent of Aerenal.

Further south is the continent of Xen’ drik, a jungle that used to be giants country but collapsed. Everice is a continent further south, and it is primary covered with ice. Frostfell is also an ice-filled tundra in the north.

The last two continents are Sarlona, which is a continent that houses the quori. These are characters from the Region of Dreams.  And the other is Argonnessen, which is a world that’s home to the dragons.

Eberron has thirteen moons; however, only twelve moons are visible as it is believed that the thirteenth vanished or is not visible to the naked eye.

This is a 320-page guide for using the Eberron setting in the 5th edition of DnD. The book has a storyline mainly in Khorvaire and an adventure series that is mostly played in Sharn.

It also has symbiotic magic items and an additional 38 monsters and Nonplayer characters, maps, and other additions to the DnD settings for the masters to create their characters.

The book also adds to the elements found in the 5th edition of DnD. These include:

  • A group of patrons that play as a background element for the whole adventure class of characters.
  • It also adds 16 unique race and sub-race options for players like orca and the Dragonmarked, Shifter Warforged, Changeling, hobgoblin, Kalashtar, bugbear, and goblin.
  • An Artificer class and three subclasses are uniquely new since they are introduced in this setting for the first time.

Exploring Eberron

Published on July 30, 2020, using the Dungeon Masters Guild by Keith Baker introduces a 247-page addition to the rising from the last war series. The book dives deeper into Eberron’s magical elements, and 48 pages squarely focused on some of the new characters and monster mechanics in the 5th edition of the game.

The iteration of DnD has been one of the most popular forks in the tabletop role-playing game, and for fans of the game who have tried Eberron, I would suggest that you join the other 15 million-plus fans of the game.
